The size variety—ranging from 4mm to 16mm—gives you great flexibility depending on what you're growing. From orchids to Dutch bucket setup, these expanded clay pebbles provide just the right amount of aeration and drainage.
These clay pebbles are organic, porous and lightweight. And started on their reusability—these things will last forever if you rinse them off and treat them right.
Hydro balls can decompose food residue, waste in the aquarium, which helps to improve and purify the tank environment for optimal filtration.
These expanded clay pebbles provide just the right amount of aeration and drainage, are a must-have for perfect moisture control and happy roots.
Plants grow in lecca require less frequent watering. The pellets hold enough moisture to reduce the need for constant monitoring and maintenance.
At the bottom of the planter, these clay pellets add nice drainage; at the top of the soil, they keep the moisture in the dirt.
Before using, rinse the clay pebbles until the water runs clear, then soak it for 24-48 hours.
Expanded clay pebbles can help your plants thrive!!! There can be a trial and error period before you’re completely comfortable with clay balls. So, if your plants fail, many times it is due to this and not the clay balls.
There are a few ways to use planters with hydroponic clay pebbles : a planter with no drainage or a nursery pot or net pot inside of planter with no drainage.
When transitioning your plant from soil to Leca be VERY CAREFUL! Wash the roots of your plant and make sure all of the dirt is off of it. If you do not do that, you can develop root rot. You’ll also need to frequently flush the dying roots when first transplanting to ensure they’re not just sitting there.
Clay Pebbles are not soil which means it does not have a nutrients. This means you have to be on top of fertilizer because water alone won’t cut it. Feed your plants (aka the water reservoir) with a hydroponic nutrient solution or liquid fertilizer.
What exactly is LECA and how does it help my plants?
LECA is lightweight expanded clay pebbles. They create air pockets for roots, absorb moisture without waterlogging, and prevent root rot by improving drainage and oxygen flow.
Can I use these for semi-hydroponic orchids?
Yes. The 4-16 mm mixed sizes cradle delicate orchid roots perfectly, providing stability and the moist yet airy environment semi-hydroponic plants need.
How else can I use these besides hydroponics?
Mix into soil for drainage, layer at pot base as a reservoir, or use as top dressing to slow evaporation and deter fungus gnats. Also works for aquariums.
Is one 10-lb bag enough? And what situations are different package sizes suitable for?
Yes. It covers several medium pots in semi-hydro or adds a drainage layer to many containers. A generous starter quantity for most indoor gardeners. 2LB: Small Bags, great for Starters; 4-10LB: Mid-Size Bags; 12-18LB: Bulk Bags – For Larger Projects
Do these help prevent root rot?
Yes. LECA creates air gaps around roots while holding only needed moisture. This keeps roots oxygenated and prevents the soggy conditions that cause rot.
